Current Bankroll: $1,552
Tournament Record:
$30+1.50 - (W 73 - L 47)
Just wanted to give a brief update. I'm in the middle of finals for school so I probably won't update or play a huge amount this week.
As I stated in my previous post, I tilted hard the other night. I didn't really play poorly, but I did take shots at 2 100+5 tourneys against a huge fish and got pwned in both. Just ran into 2 setups. It really frustrated me that I was so undisciplined.
I have been experiencing some pretty serious variance the past 3 or 4 days though. I started off 29-9 (76%) at the 30's (I didn't expect to sustain this) and since then I am 44-38 (53.6%). I obviously was due for a bad run and was completely anticipating it. Handling it well is easier said than done, but I think I learned my lesson.
I am feeling extremely motivated to get through this breakeven stretch and stick to my plan of playing 500 30's.
On a better note, I reached Gold Star status today. I'm not really interested in using my FPP's for anything at the moment, but the 50% increase in the rate I earn them is pretty sweet. Hopefully after I get through my 500 30's and start playing 50's I can take a shot at reaching the Platinum level. I played approximately 550 HU tourney's in April (mostly at lower stakes). If I can keep up that volume of play at the 33's I could maybe even get close to Platinum this month if my math is right.
Let's hope I start running crazy hot again as of right now.
Note: Everyone should watch the movie, "The History of the World: Part 1," starring Mel Brooks. It is hilarious.

Tilt
Hit some variance the past few days. Tilted hard tonight. Lost a couple hundred.
I really had no reason to be on tilt either. I can typically handle variance, especially heads up.
I'm really mad at myself.
Taking a day or two off and am going to come back strong.
Still up 1500 this month so I should probably just stop being a bitch about this.

Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund Tournament
Hey guys.
Pokerstars is hosting a charity tournament to support the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET. It is a $0.01+19.99 buyin. The remaining funds (19.99 per player) will be matched by Pokerstars and then sent to Virginia Tech.
The funds will be used to cover expenses but not limited to:
- assistance to victims and their families
- grief counseling
- memorials
- communication expenses
- comfort expenses
I am a recent graduate of Virginia Tech and I love the school and the town of Blacksburg, Virginia. I just wanted to make sure that you all are aware of this opportunity to make the lives of those affected by this tragedy a little bit easier.

update and comments
Current Bankroll: 1,892 Dollars
Total Profit: 592 Dollars
Tournaments Played:
$30+1.50 level: 38 (Record: 29 W - 9 L) - ITM % - 76.3%
$50+2.50 level: 0
So far I'm playing well and running even better. I'm trying to be realistic with my current ITM% and am planning on hitting some variance eventually. 76% is ridiculous.
Something that I have been thinking about recently has been the importance of taking time to analyze/study the game instead of just playing a ton of hands. The cliche, "practice makes perfect," really doesn't apply to poker. I once read that for a poker player rather, "practice simply makes permanent."
I have probably played more hands than I would care to admit. I have played poker pretty much 6/7 days a week at least for the past 4 years, but in the first 3 years of that time almost no time was allotted to studying/analyzing the game. Read books, talk with other knowledgeable players, post hand histories on poker forums, use pokertracker to plug leaks. Since seriously devoting myself to analyzing more and playing less a few months ago, my overall game has improved exponentially. For whatever reason, not enough players take advantage of the wealth of resources available to them to improve their game.

Videos
I have been working on setting up the programs to make a video of me 2-tabling the 30's. I have the video working, but am now trying to add audio to it for commentary.
If I can get this working I will start posting videos hopefully once or twice a month.
I think this would be really helpful for aspiring HU players.

Successful First Day
Beginning Bankroll: 1300 Dollars
Current Bankroll: 1636 Dollars
Profit: 336 Dollars
Tournaments played: 30+1.50 level: 23 Tournaments (17 W - 6L) ITM: 74%
50+2.50 level: 0
So I guess creating a poker blog helps you run better. I played for approx 3 hours today and ran well/played well. It's nice to start off at this kind of pace, but it obviously won't be sustainable.
Recently I began 2-tabling the HU games instead of just single-tabling. At first it seemed a little fast paced, but it keeps me from having FPS (fancy play syndrome) against donks that I should beat if I play straight.
I'm not really using any game selection in playing the 30's. I usually just sign up whenever I am ready to play the next one. So far most of my opponents have been pretty huge losers on sharkscope. I think this is because my stats have improved dramatically in the past few months and good players are less likely to sit with me.
Interesting hand that came up today:
PokerStars Game #9595089416: Tournament #48698543, $30.00+$1.50 Hold'em No Limit - Match Round I, Level II (15/30) - 2007/04/25 - 00:57:12 (ET)
Table '48698543 1' 2-max Seat #2 is the button
Seat 1: HokieGreg HU (1785 in chips)
Seat 2: payup123 (1215 in chips)
payup123: posts small blind 15
HokieGreg HU: posts big blind 30
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to HokieGreg HU [4d As]
payup123: calls 15
HokieGreg HU: raises 70 to 100
payup123: raises 1115 to 1215 and is all-in
HokieGreg HU: calls 1115
*** FLOP *** [8d 8s 4c]
*** TURN *** [8d 8s 4c] [9s]
*** RIVER *** [8d 8s 4c 9s] [5h]
*** SHOW DOWN ***
HokieGreg HU: shows [4d As] (two pair, Eights and Fours)
payup123: shows [6s Qc] (a pair of Eights)
HokieGreg HU said, "gg"
HokieGreg HU collected 2430 from pot
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot 2430 | Rake 0
Board [8d 8s 4c 9s 5h]
Seat 1: HokieGreg HU (big blind) showed [4d As] and won (2430) with two pair, Eights and Fours
Seat 2: payup123 (button) (small blind) showed [6s Qc] and lost with a pair of Eights
I know this call looks terrible, but we had some history. I had a slight lead in chips throughout the match and had been very aggressive preflop. I had picked up some hands OOP and he had limped and i raised to 80 (10/20 blinds) and he reraised me to 225 3 times so far (I had A7s, A9, and K10s) and I folded each time. He had begun the match playing very passively and folding to my aggression, but I could tell he was beginning to get frustrated and was starting to play back at me.
I will often just check the bb with A4, but I wanted to maintain my maniac-aggro image with this guy because I felt it would pay off later in the match. The hand before this I had raised OTB and he insta-pushed and I folded. When I raised I was pretty much hoping for a fold and was planning on folding to another of his reraises to 250-300 or whatever. When he pushed my first thought was to fold and just be happy that I've got him totally off his game, but the massive overbet with me having no history of even calling any of his reraises to 225 I really put him on complete air.
Nothing about this hand is a standard play for me, but every opponent and every match HU is different.

In need of motivation...
It seems to be the thing to do in the online poker world these days to write a blog about one's successes and failures on the virtual felt. I have always found many of these blogs to be self-indulging and simply an attempt by the author to promote his name in the poker community.
Nonetheless, I need a way to increase the volume of my play. Throughout my blog I will chronicle my journey playing heads up sit n' go's beginning at the $30+1.50 level. I have already worked my way up the HU SNG chain beginning at the 5+.25's and through the 20+1's. I have built up a solid bankroll, but am beginning to feel burnt out and unmotivated. Hopefully this blog will help me to stick to my course of action and increase the amount of tourneys that I am playing (well).
GOALS:
- Play 500 HU SNG's at the 30+1.50 level with a minimum ITM % of 60%.
- Play 500 HU SNG'S at the 50+2.50 level with a minimum ITM% of 58%.
- Total profit no less than 5k.
* I want to meet these goals no later than July 21, 2007.
I am a huge nit when it comes to bankroll management. I am playing with an excessive bankroll for the buyin level I will be playing at, but I don't want to jump from 20's to 50's just because my bankroll can allow it. I want to put in the hours and become a better player. I will see a greater long run profit with this attitude imo.
Starting Bankroll: 1300 dollars (41 buyins at the 30+1.50's)
I will try to update my progress at least every three days or so.
If any of you are interested in talking with me about hand analysis or just HU play in general, feel free to IM me at CAPS122 anytime. I don't know how interesting this will be to you guys. If anything, it may motivate you to increase your level and/or volume of play and eventually increase your profits as well.
